Blog Post #13 - Typical Story Patterns of Horror
To understand how I want my film to play out, I must first understand the typical story patterns in horror films. Typical horror stories start with a seemingly normal and familiar environment that becomes increasingly unsettling and off putting, until a climactic incident introduces the threat. Leading to a build of tension and suspense with unexplained events, eventually leading to the protagonist confronting the source of fear. In which the protagonist wins, and is often left with scars or ptsd from the events, or the protagonist is killed or stopped by the malicious force.
A good example of this formula would be Adam Green's "Hatchet"(2006)
A film that starts out seemingly normal, but then becomes increasingly off-putting and unsettling through the revelation of Victor Crowley, and his grotesque introduction and his pursuit of the protagonists in the film.
Knowing the typical story patterns in horror will help me map out a story idea for my film, so I can write the script for the opening scene.
